December 2014
Oh my dear, another Yellow Dot.
Some of the content is getting a tad old. Terribly sorry about that (sack the editor – any replacement volunteers?).
On the positive side, some of the news is hot off the press J
Given there’s soooo much content, we’ve got a new innovation, a table of contents, YAY:
Sunday Practice During The Festive Season
Dickson Squash Club will continue to welcome members to Sunday Practice throughout December and January but with reduced hours, so come along a bit earlier for your hit with like-minded squashies!
Dec 14 1pm to 4pm
21 1pm to 3pm
28 12 noon to 2pm
Jan 4 1pm to 3pm
11 1pm to 5pm
(then back to normal)
If you want to practice longer, please contact Doug Lean on 0419 290 531 to volunteer your assistance.
Autumn 2015 Pennant
The next pennant starts during the week of 24 February.
Keep an eye out for the email that Dick has sent out, and get your name down promptly. Don’t make him chase you. He’s busy and cranky enough without the extra workload…
Christmas Party
Saturday 6 December saw many of us descend on the Crowne Plaza for a night eating, swilling, laughing, trivia-ing and (for the foolhardy) dancing.
As always, we were delighted that Santa came Ho Ho Ho-íng along.
Here’s some evidence of the frivolity

Thanks to the following people for making the night so memorable:
- Stephen and Maddie providing the trivia
- Leland for playing the tunes
- Darcy for opening up the venue
- Danny for getting us into the dancin’
- Justin for exceptional photo-bombing
- Bruce for being mysteriously absent when Santa was there.
If you want a copy of the photo-booth image capturing your personal encounter with Santa, please email anthonybburgess@gmail.com.
300 Club
At the Christmas Party, we welcomed three new inductees into our “300 Club”. These are stalwarts who hit their 300th “matrix match” for Dickson during the year. They are:
- Pete Bausmann
- Scott Reid
- Jeremey Czoban
Here are Pete and Scottie in their stunning new shirts
In Scott’s case, there’s a dispute raging… with his shirt being prepared on the assumption that he’d hit the mark in the Grand Final. However, the squash gods were unkind and he’s been left stranded on 299 matches. The shirt will be stripped off his back, literally, if he doesn’t stump up for us in 2015!!
Juniors
Up and coming Dickson junior Riley Ellis has achieved an Australian career high ranking of as #10 for his U13 age group. His results show that love of the sport combined with enthusiasm and practice can be rewarding. Riley has also been nominated as Junior player of the year for 2013/2014.
2014 AGM
The Annual General Meeting was held on 2 August following the Club Championships. During the AGM, the awards noted in the following sections were presented; and the 2014-15 committee elected (see back page).
Paul Gets Life
Paul Cartwright has joined the illustrious elite of Dick O’Rourke, Ted Kaminiski and Doug Lean as a Life Member of Dickson Squash Club.
This award reflects Paul’s decades of commitment to the club, both on and off the court and was the obvious candidate to join this prestigious group.
Congratulations Paul!
President’s Award – Len Early
Every year, our President gives an award to the Club member who he or she thinks has made an outstanding contribution to the Club. This year the winner was Len Early, who has single-handedly rescued the finances of Squash ACT and literally saved it from insolvency. Without a financial Squash ACT, squash in all areas (including our club) would have suffered enormously.
Congratulations Len!
Bodyline Sports Player of the Year
Every year, the Bodyline Sports Player of the Year award is presented to the player whose Matrix rating increased the most after playing in both pennant competitions for Dickson. This year the winner was Joseph Howard, who increased his matrix by a massive 33.6 in 36 matches across the two pennants.
Special mentions were given to the following players who also had significant increases: Brendan Cara, Michael Howard, Michael Hill and Harrison Barnett.

Clash of the Dickson Titans
The Barnett and Howard clans provide a strong backbone to our club… and the battles between them are epic. The 2014 Spring Pennant saw the Howard’s winning a total of 46 matches, just eclipsed by the Barnett’s who won 47 matches.
Well done to all: Harrison, Stephen, Leland and Madeleine Barnett; and Alexander, Michael, Joseph and Gavin Howard.
And Jodie Barnett and Catherine Howard have also been known to swing the racket from time to time too! What impressive clans they are!!
2014-15 Committee
The 2014-15 Committee was elected at the AGM. They are:
President: Stephen Barnett
Vice President: Len Early
Secretary: Pam Price
Treasurer: Dick O’Rourke
General Members:
Leanna Davey Paul Cartwright
Julie Polson Doug Lean
Anthony Burgess Madeleine Barnett
Dominic Ransan-Cooper
Hayden Ross Karina Sommers
Remember that you can contact anyone on the committee, at any time, if you have questions, suggestions or comments about any aspect of the Club’s operations.
